In a nutshell

The CORE Project is launching the Doing Economics Data Competition 2020. The competition is open to any student enrolled in any undergraduate degree program in any country. We present students with the following challenge:

Using one of the data analysis techniques in CORE’s Doing Economics, produce a short report that identifies a specific policy problem related to one of the following topics: climate change, inequality or COVID-19; explains why it is important, and suggests how it can be solved. You should use either Excel or R to analyse the data.

Don’t worry if you’ve never done something like this before – Doing Economics contains step-by-step guidance on some ways to conduct data analysis and present results in Excel and R, all explained in a non-technical and accessible way. You can also get ideas of policy issues by looking at the datasets in Doing Economics, in our COVID-19 Collection, or by looking at last year’s entries.

Prizes

There will be two categories in the competition, one for R and one for Excel, and two prizes per category. The top two entries in each category will receive the following prizes:

  • 1st place = £500 (Amazon vouchers)
  • Runner-up = £250 (Amazon vouchers)

How to enter

You can submit only one entry – either an individual or a team entry, using either Excel or R. Teams are limited to a maximum of 4 students, who can be enrolled in different universities. You must submit your entry to [email protected] by 11:59 pm UK time (BST) on 20th September 2020. Please follow the submission instructions illustrated in the ‘CORE Doing Economics Competition 2020 Overview‘ document, also attached below.
