What is CORE?

Hi, I’m Wendy Carlin. I’m the CORE director and a professor of economics at University College London. 

CORE is a global community of researchers, instructors and learners who are developing free open-access textbooks and other teaching and learning resources for economics courses. 

CORE’s authors are economists and instructors from around the world, giving their time and expertise for free to transform how economics is taught. They are experts in micro- and macroeconomics, game theory, economic history, political economy, behavioural, labour, industrial, development and environmental economics. Joining them are hundreds of contributors who believe in our mission to transform how economics is taught.

Our project began in 2013, a result of a shared frustration at the traditional economic curriculum still being taught at universities five years after the most seismic financial crisis in eight decades. The world had changed but teaching had not.

In 2014, the first units of our free ebook The Economy were piloted in nine universities

Almost a decade later  the CORE project is making great progress - more than one hundred and fifteen thousand students each year are now taught using CORE, in 370 universities, in 62 countries, and in five languages. 

So how are we doing this?
We develop and publish free high-quality open access textbooks and educational resources that take the best of contemporary economics into the classroom.

For instructors, we provide a whole suite of tools to build your course - interactive ebooks, lecture slides, practice and exam questions, classroom games, simulations and more.

For learners, the ebook’s interactive elements and additional resources enable you to study economics at your own time and pace, on your laptop or phone, while testing yourself as you go along. 

In summary, CORE is a global community, transforming economics education, and providing free resources for people around the world.
